On January 15, 2011, The Quantum Eye will move to Theatre 80 Saint Marks, where we will have shows every Saturday at 5PM.

In its sixth year of performances, The Quantum Eye continues to evolve, adding some new effects that take advantage of our wonderful new space. If you’ve seen the show before, come and join us again!

Our new home is an historic institution which started it’s life as a “speakeasy” during prohibition before becoming the Off-Broadway theatre it is today. Such stars as Dom DeLuise and Myrna Loy have left their marks in the sidewalk outside of the theatre and Frank Sinatra worked as a singing waiter there early in his career.

For tickets, visit our website or call us directly at 347-294-0092.

In its fifth year of performances, The Quantum Eye has perormed in dozens of different venues, ranging from 2,000 seat theaters to cabarettes so these temporary moves will not lessen the show in any way.

As a professional mentalist and magician, I perform many demonstrations of what appears to be mind reading in my show and I blend an array of different techniques and subtleties to create that illusion. While I will never reveal how I do what I do, I am willing to discuss one of the techniques, especially if doing so justifies sharing a picture of my dog, Dylan.

One important skill I use is simple non-verbal communication. How much of what you say is said in words? Those who claim to see into other’s minds might not be looking that deeply. It has been widely stated that only 5-10% of communication is, in fact, verbal; the rest is comprised of a combination of conscious and unconscious signals broadcast through facial expressions, body language, gestures, tone, rhythm and volume of voice. While I believe that the 5-10% number is a myth based on an early misunderstanding of a study, there is no question that non-verbal communication can be a powerful tool if we make a conscious study of it.

Consciously learn the vocabulary of this “other” language and a world of information about those around you becomes available. One of the best guides I have had in my studies of this particular art is Dylan (see above), a very talkative Golden Retriever mix. His ability to “Read” me is extraordinary and I hope, one day, to come close to his mastery of listening to what others aren’t saying.

Pronounced nee-mon-iks, MNEMONICS are either verbal or visual cues used to help one remember otherwise difficult-to-remember information. Nature provides few of us with eidetic memory (total recall), but by using mental tools such as mnemonics, memory can be greatly enhanced. They work through the use of repetition and associations between easy-to-remember facts paired with pattern-poor facts. Using this tool, in a specific situation, one can simulate a “photographic” memory. The best way to demonstrate this is to demonstrate:

We remember which direction to set our clocks when Daylight Saving Time arrives with the mnemonic: “Spring forward. Fall back.”

Central American nations are remembered by schoolchildren (at least when I was in grade school) with the mnemonic: “Better Go Home Every Night Completely Paid.” (From North to South: Belize, Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Panama.)

The rhyme “Thirty days hath September, April, June, and November; all the rest have thirty-one, except February alone” allows us to remember the arbitrary pattern: 31, 28 (29), 31, 30, 31, 30, 31, 31, 30, 31, 30, and 31.

Whether card counting or remembering the names of guests in a party, memory systems and tricks can be used with impressive results. None of these systems actually makes us smarter, but looking smarter is the important part.
