Maybe They Are Out To Get You

I’ve never been one to believe in conspiracy theories. As a general rule, we’re not very good at keeping secrets and as more people get involved, it becomes exponentially more difficult to keep those secrets. With that in mind, here are some of my favorite well-documented “secret” societies:

Illuminati

The Knights Templar
They have achieved more Hollywood fame than any other secretive order, perhaps because they were destroyed in 1307 by a coalition of the French King and the Pope. Even if the group itself was terminated, many of the individuals and their wealth persisted and many current secret societies claim to be the direct descendents of the Knights.

The Bilderbergs
Named after the hotel in Holland where its early meetings were held, this group is composed of over 100 of the global power brokers and contains much of the remaining European royalty. One of the classier conspiracies due to the class of its members.

The Council on Foreign Relations (CFR)
Organized with the consent of President Woodrow Wilson in 1917, this “inquiry” originally composed of some 100 influential men has developed into the most powerful secret society whose founding goal is rumored to be the achievement of a one-world government.

The Freemasons
They may not have succeeded yet, but they can probably be credited as the first documented secret society intent on world domination. Very influential in fixing parking tickets.

Opus Dei
Perhaps you have read a book or seen a recent film featuring them. Specific agendas aside, they do exist. This powerful cult of personality within the Catholic Church has an estimated 85,000 members. With so many members it has been impossible for them to keep their secret society a secret.

The Illuminati
In the way the brand name “Kleenex” has come to describe all tissues, Illuminati has come to describe even the most pedestrian of global conspiracies.

The Order of Skull and Bones
No list would be complete, and this is no complete list, without the secret society to which our President belongs. This Yale based “fraternity” taps 15 new members every year from a selection of the youth of the most powerful families. Its philosophy of world domination, while similar to all the other’s “The end (a better world) justify the means (exercise of ruthless manipulation),” seems not to have gotten beyond the means (accumulation of power, power and more power)…

Note: Please don’t come and get me.
